The Kabba/Bunu LGA Legislative Council has expressed its commitment to come up with legislation capable of boosting the local’s internal security.
The Council Leader, RT Hon (Mrs.) Comfort Olufunke Obaromi on Thursday summoned an emergency security sitting in response to the resurgence of security challenges in the local government area, saying that the task before the house committee on security is to address the local’s security challenges, with oversight responsibilities over the Military, Nigeria Police Command, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the special local hunters.
She said, “To enhance internal security, we pledge unwavering legislative support.
“Our oversight activities will be comprehensive, priority will be given to the welfare and provision of adequate equipment for our personnel, enabling swift responses to distress calls.”
She called on the council members to contribute their ideas in the fight against internal insecurity, saying, “It’s helpful to have stakeholders meetings with all the traditional rulers, NURTW, MOUN and security agencies for proper documentation and identification of all migrants.
Speaking at the plenary sitting which had in attendance all council members, Comfort said the purpose of this sitting is to brainstorm on the situations in certain areas of interest, notably Kabba, Obajana, Lokoja and Kabba, Ayere Roads.
“The recent occurrences on that axis clearly indicate the re-opening of a front on that route, and this points us strongly to the need for renewed focus and coordination.
“Okebukun, Odo-Ape and Agbadun axis have become areas of concern as well; where one of their council members was kidnapped from his residence.
“Our administration is fully committed to the security and safety of the whole of Kabba/Bunu LGA State, because security is the cornerstone for the realization of our RESTORATION Agenda.
“On the side of security agencies, and in light of the challenges we are confronting, I must state that it has become vital for us to further close ranks, rub minds and revisit our collaborative structures. Deepening and strengthening of human intelligence networks is an obvious area requiring urgent review, towards restoring peace and security along these critical highways, and to the troubled communities.
“It is my sincere hope that we will deliberate openly, extensively and productively, and proffer lasting solutions to these problems. I look forward to receiving your valuable contributions. I thank you all for your presence. God bless you all,” Comfort added.
The legislative council has set up a Special Committee on Security as part of its efforts to contribute to measures put in place by the executive to address the incessant cases of insecurity across parts of the local government area.
The resolution of the Council to set up the Committee emerged from deliberations at a closed-door session of Members which was held on Thursday, 5 December 2024 Although details from the session remain undisclosed, the Council Leader of the Kabba/Bunu LGA legislative council, Hon. Comfort Olufunke Obaromi (APC: Odolu Ward) has stated that the Special Committee will be responsible for developing a proposal on ways to address security problems in the local government area.
The Special Committee comprises the Principal Officers and 4 other lawmakers.
According to Hon. Comfort, the Special Committee is expected to present its report and recommendation to the Executive Chairman, Hon (Barr.) Zacchaeus Dare Michael for implementation.
Following a closed-door session lasting over three hours, the Council strongly condemned the surge in kidnappings, banditry, and the brutal killing of innocent citizens by criminal elements.
The Council Majority Leader, Hon Moses Baiyeshea revealed that all 15 councilors sponsored the motion addressing the critical issue of insecurity due to its paramount importance.
During the deliberations, Council Leader, Hon Comfort Olufunke Obaromi expressed profound concern regarding the increasing incidents of banditry and kidnappings, emphasizing that the situation has reached a point where intermediaries are facilitating ransom payments on behalf of kidnappers.
Comfort vehemently denounced recent attacks, particularly those by kidnappers in Agbadun that took away one of their members.
The Council has adjourned her sitting indefinitely, as the citizens of Kabba/Bunu LGA awaits decisive actions to address the growing security concerns.
